The Physician As Coach: The Awakening
Equity Press (2007)
The Physician As Coach is the fictional tale of two physicians: Dr. Lukas Damian, a brilliant clinician and physician leader, and his equally talented nephew, Dr. Hugh Briss. Hugh is young, brash and brilliant with a demeanor on par with the infamous TV-physician, House. Hugh is tough on medical staff, colleagues and even his patients. Hugh's uncle, Dr. Damian, recognizes much of his younger self in his nephew and is very concerned that history will repeat itself... for the worst. Dr. Damian chooses to have an intervention with his nephew. At dinner one night, he tells his nephew the story of how he learned that being a first-rate clinician did not necessarily make him a good physician. He reveals how his hard-edged behavior with people led to a crisis that almost ruined his career... and cost one man his life. Dr. Damian goes on to explain how embracing the idea of being a "physician coach" enabled him to turn things around for the better... for himself, for his medical team and for his patients.

It's not just about money. There is also a Hidden Paycheck out there that people desperately want to get. And you, as their immediate leader, are the only person who can pay it to them.
BreakOUT: Unleash the Power of Human Capital

Many of us as individuals and organizations are trapped inside the "box of incrementalism." Yet, these self-imposed limitations cause us as individuals and organizations to be satisfied with the status-quo... and when we do change, we only make the modest of changes. But, today, change comes so fast that incrementalism doesn't allow us to keep up. In fact, we get left in the dust. It is only by following the tenets of BreakOUT that individuals and organizations can find their true competitive edge. If you can BreakOUT, you and your organization can reach new levels of performance and personal satisfaction.
